Uptown Temporary Public Art Project needs donations

The Temporary Spice Project is a community oriented temporary public art project that is responding to the question “In A New Light: What Makes A Neighborhood Well?” The project will focus on ideas of ‘inclusion’, ‘knowing each other’ and ‘diversity’. They have chosen the supporting themes of ‘making connections’ and ‘educational opportunities’. The Temporary Spice Project will collaborate with the Robert R. McCormick Boys and Girls Club through a series of workshops to be held with their students.

Contributing material to this project will help with the making of this community project that also includes an educational component. The group will be working with the Robert R. McCormick Boys and Girls Club as a part of their summer arts program. Besides contributing to art and education it is an excellent way to re-use and reduce your unused items. Most clothing/fabric articles cannot be recycled or do not biodegrade due to the synthetic materials added to their content.

The Uptown Temporary Public Art Project is beginning to collect OLD clothing articles and fabric items with high synthetic content. The collected items will be used for the temporary public art project Uptown neighbors have been working on since last summer. Collection will start on Monday MAY 9th and continue through Saturday MAY 21st. The work is scheduled to be revealed in August 2011.

If you have any of the following OLD clothing articles or fabric items with high synthetic content, please let them know:

tarps umbrellas shower curtains rain coats high quality plastic bags (no supermarket bags please) plastic sheets plastic table cloths reusable shopping bags sports clothing polyester clothing sail cloth parachute material car covers outdoor fabrics of all kinds (drapes, pillow fabric, table cloth etc) vinyl sheets vinyl tarps tent inflatable children's toys inflatable pools

They are also open to collecting clothing and fabric items that have a lesser synthetic content for this project such as sheets, t-shirts, shirts, dress pants, skirts etc. For the artwork the group will be tearing the fabric articles up so nothing you donate would be recognized at the end.
